Reading is powerful. When a child reads a book, their imagination is sparked and they see the world from a different perspective. Hearing someone else’s story and imagining it as his or her own helps children internalize the thoughts, feelings, and actions of another. When the book’s content is of social emotional triumphs, the reader triumphs inside the story envisioning themselves mastering a range of relational and cognitive skills. Such mental role play builds courage opening the possibility for action.
“Books are the bees which carry
the quickening pollen from one to another mind.”
– James Russell Lowell
Utilized within a classroom, The Strengths Project storybooks are designed to showcase each child’s unique character strengths through the storytelling of related life experiences. When a child manages their social and emotional world with success, it is an empowering life experience. The Strengths Projects seeks to celebrate these successes and highlight them as an example and learning tool for peers. Further, when a child reads about their own positive experiences, it boosts confidence and improves self-esteem.
